The Zweigelt is a special Austrian red wine variety. It is a crossbreed of
St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch and was introduced in 1922 by Professor
Dr. Fritz Zweigelt at the Bundeslehranstalt für Wein- und Obstbau
(federal college for wine and fruit growing) in Klosterneuburg. He
originally called it Rotburger, but soon everybody referred to it als
Zweigelt, and so the professors name became a synonym for his vine
crossbreed. The variety does not have high demands on soil or climate
conditions and is resistant against average winter frost. For gaining good
grape qualities the yield has to be reduced by cutting off some of the
unripe small grapes just after blossoming.
We offer two different kinds of Zweigelt. A lighter fashioned wine which is
called Zweigelt Rebe, and the heavier Blauer Zweigelt.
