The Pinot Noir (also called Weißer Burgunder or Weißburgunder)
originates from the Burgundy region in France where it can be retraced back
to the days of the roman empire. It is believed that this variety is the
ancestor of the Pinot family which embraces varieties like Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder) and Pinot
Gris (Grauburgunder) among others. In Austria it is known since the Middle
Ages. Nowadays it is commonly considered to be one of the best and most
precious red wine varieties world-wide.
The Pinot Noir demands warm, deep and rich soils whereby the soil markedly
influences the wines flavour charactaristics. For hiqh quality grapes a
mild, warm and not to humid climate is advantageous. For a red wine variety
the grapes ripen relatively early.
