In
Gols wine-culture at least
dates back to the time of the the roman empire but it is likely that even the romans
already met wine-growing celts when they came into the province they called Pannonia to
fortify the northern border of their realm. Following the Roman times came the
confusions of the Migration Period. People were coming and soon vanishing into history
again but wine-growing continued. Of course this is not suprising, cosidering the favourable
growing conditions of the area. Starting from the Middle Ages wine-culture can be
verified more or less continuously an was only briefly interrupted from time to
time by wars, plagues and other disasters. But the resident settlers were always quickly
rebuilding their villages and very soon growing wine again.
Summarized this means, that due to the warm pannonian
climate and the
good
soils the cultivation
of excellent high-grade white and red wines flourishes hereabouts since 2000 years at
least, regardless of the often harsh circumstances. Luckily these times have gone by long
ago and today people are very open-minded and friendly. This can be ascribed to the unique
situation in the heart of Europe. We live approximately 5 km (3 miles) from the Hungarian
and 30 km (19 miles) from the Slovakian border. Therefore different people have always met
and dealt with each other in our area and we now share a long history. There was never much
room for narrow-mindedness and people adopted open and positive expectations into the now
united Europe where borders become less and less important.
Like many of the established families in Gols we can trace back our roots for several
hundred years and because almost everyone used to grow wine back then just like today the
same is truee for our winery. For centuries people from Gols, including our family, have
lived and learned wine and it is no wonder that it still plays the central part in everydays
live in Gols. Nowadays probably even more than ever bevore.
