Our family owned wine estate is situated in Gols, one of Austrias most famous and
greatest wine-growing communities. Gols lies in the Burgenland (federal state) and
there in the Neusiedlersee - Seewinkel wine region at the eastern shore of central
Europes only steppe lake: Lake Neusiedl. At the northern rim of this region which
itself forms the most western offshoot of the Hungarian lowlands stretches a huge
flat gravel plate that was sedimented by the Danube river during the last ice age.
On the slopes of that plate, facing Lake Neusiedl, and in the plain between both, the
old vineyards of Gols are located.
Aside from its long
history
in winemaking Gols is nowadays well known all around the world by virtue of the great
wines that grow here. Gols is home to more than 100 wine estates and wines from
our hometown can constantly be found at the highest ranks of many international wine
competitions. Another remarkable fact which is also valid for the rest of Austria is
that wine-growing has always been and still is almost entierely a family business.
Therefore the size of a typical Austrian winery is relatively small when compared
internationally, meaning that the production volumes of individual wines are too.
But this special characteristic gives us the possibility to devote our full attention
to our products, taking individual care of every single wine and therefore reach the
highest possible qualities. This is an unbeatable advantage that we have over bigger
companies which utilize more industrialized wine production methods and we are
very aware of it. Of course this also manifests in our winemaking
philosophy
In Gols white, red and dessert wines share a long history. In recent years the favourable
climate conditions of the area around
Lake Neusiedl naturally lead to the fact that wines which profit from very ripe grapes get
most of the attention now. This means that Gols has become most famous for great red wines
as well as rich white and high-grade dessert wines. Still light and fresh whites can be found
too and are highly valued throughout Austria and neighbouring countries.
