The wine harvest has again started early this year. Last week we brought in the first grapes of the 2008
vintage which we will use for our Junger Riesling. Now the harvest is in full swing and we can start to
appraise how the vintage will turn out.
The hot summer that lasted until only a few days ago lead to the early harvest date and of course to the
development of very ripe and sweet grapes. So we expect to see very nice wines this year with a lot of
fruitiness combined with a full and pleasant body. Only in some areas there are lesser quanitites to be
harvested due to hailstorm damage in summer. There it is especially important to pick ony the best healthy
grapes for the production of high quality wines. That is why we rely on manual harvest for all our grapes
because selection by people ist still by far the very best method of separating the good from lesser quality
grapes.
We will continue harvesting for more than a month although most of the actual picking
will be finished within the next two weeks or so. Usually we start with whites and early reds and then after
a few days brake we pick later ripening grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweet dessert wines like TBA
(Trockenbeerenauslese) or the famous Icewine are then harvested much later of course and usually the last
grapes that we bring in every year.
